Mark 5:25-34 And there was a woman who had had a discharge of blood for twelve years, and who suffered much under many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was no better but rather grew worse. She had heard the reports about Jesus and came up behind him in the crowd and touched his garment. For she said, "If I touch even his garments, I will be made well." And immediately the flow of blood dried up, and she felt in her body that she was healed of her disease. And Jesus, perceiving in himself that power had gone out from him, immediately turned about in the crowd and said, "Who touched my garments?" And his disciples said to him, "You see the crowd pressing around you, and yet you say, 'Who touched me?'" And he looked around to see who had done it. But the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came in fear and trembling and fell down before him and told him the whole truth. And he said to her, "Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace, and be healed of your disease." (ESV)
In this example, we have a woman who was unclean, under Judaic law, for twelve years. In just a matter of moments, Jesus enabled her to be clean, and he healed her medically. He does the same for us today.
First, our cleanliness. In forgiving our sins, Jesus gives us a clean slate before God. He makes us desire more and more right things as we walk with him. We move more and more of who we are and what we do into the light for Jesus to clean out sin from our hearts.
Secondly, Jesus can heal. God is the Greatest Physician who can heal us when no doctor can.
Finally, Jesus asked the woman to come forward. Being the omniscient (all-knowing) God, he didn't need to be told who he had healed, he already knew. However, I believe that his desire to see her come forward from the crowd shows us what he wants us to do when we receive an answer to our prayers: boldly share our happiness with those around us.
The woman can also teach us. She shows us how to receive the healing of Jesus. All she did was get close to him and reach out. Likewise, we can do this spiritually. We have to draw near to him in prayer or by reading the Bible and ask for his help, and he will come and heal our lives, make us clean, and be with us always.
